What's the difference between a direct hire and a contract oilfield job?

With a direct-hire role, you're employed directly by the company doing the work — a drilling contractor, service company, or operator — and go through that company's own hiring and onboarding process. With a contract or staffing role, you're employed by a staffing or contract-labor agency, which places you with a client company for a specific job or project; your day-to-day work may look similar, but your actual employer of record is the staffing agency, not the client you're working for. That distinction affects who manages your paperwork and benefits, who you'd raise a workplace issue with, and in some cases scheduling stability, since a staffing agency's contract with a client can end independently of your individual performance. Neither path is inherently better or a red flag — both are common, legitimate ways into the industry. Confirm which one a specific posting is before accepting.
