Do oilfield jobs require a CDL?
Only driving-specific roles require a CDL — hauling water, sand, chemicals, crude, or equipment — not most rig-floor, completions, or production field roles. A Commercial Driver's License (typically Class A for most oilfield hauling work) opens up a distinct set of jobs at water-hauling, sand-logistics, crude-trucking, and equipment-hauling companies, some of which hire CDL drivers with little or no prior oilfield experience. If you don't have a CDL and aren't planning to get one, that doesn't close off drilling, completions, or production roles — those typically require only a standard driver's license. Conflating "oilfield job" with "CDL job" is a common misunderstanding; they're overlapping but distinct categories of work with different typical employers and different entry requirements.
