How dangerous is oilfield work, really?
Oilfield work carries real, well-documented risk — federal data has shown oil and gas extraction with a fatal injury rate historically around seven times higher than the average for all U.S. workers (9.8 per 100,000 full-time workers in 2021, versus 3.8 across private industry overall, per BLS). That's a genuine number, not an exaggeration, and it's worth taking seriously rather than dismissing. It also isn't evenly distributed: risk varies significantly by specific role, employer, and how seriously a given company treats safety training, equipment maintenance, and procedure. The most common fatal events in the industry are vehicle incidents, contact injuries (being struck by or caught in equipment), and explosions — not a mysterious, unavoidable hazard, but specific, identifiable risks that a strong safety culture and proper training measurably reduce. Evaluating a specific employer's safety practices matters more than the industry-wide average alone.
