Is 40 too old to start working in the oilfield?

No — being 40 doesn't automatically rule you out of oilfield work. What tends to matter more is physical readiness for the role, willingness to work rotational or on-call schedules, a clean driving record, and the ability to pass a drug screen and background check — the same baseline expectations that apply to any new hire, at any age. Starting later can even be an advantage: mechanical experience, a CDL, military service, construction, or other physically demanding work history often reads as valuable to an employer evaluating a new crew member, regardless of age. If demanding manual labor genuinely isn't realistic for you, the oilfield also has equipment-operation, logistics, maintenance, and technical roles that are less physically intensive than rig-floor work. The most useful next move at 40 is to lead your resume with that hands-on history and target the entry-level and no-experience roles below.
