Is the oilfield industry growing or shrinking?

Oil and gas industry employment moves in cycles tied to commodity prices, drilling activity, and broader energy demand — it isn't on a single, steady growth or decline trajectory, and a specific employment-outlook number from any one year can be outdated within months as conditions shift. What's more durable than any single year's figure is the underlying pattern: active producing regions like the Permian Basin continue to need drilling, completions, production, and midstream workers as long as wells are being drilled and operated, and skilled, experienced field and technical workers remain in demand even during slower periods, more so than easily-replaceable entry-level headcount. Rather than trying to time a career decision around whether the industry is "growing" in the abstract, it's more useful to look at real, current hiring activity in the specific region and role type you're targeting.
