What is a "company man" in the oilfield?

"Company man" is industry shorthand for the operator’s (the oil and gas company that owns the well) on-site representative, overseeing the well on behalf of the operator rather than working for the drilling contractor running the rig. They make key operational decisions, coordinate between the drilling contractor, service companies, and the operator’s own engineering team, and are ultimately accountable for the well being drilled to the operator’s specifications and budget. It’s a senior, typically well-compensated role that usually requires substantial field and technical experience — not an entry point into the industry. The distinction matters because it illustrates a broader pattern in oilfield work: several different companies (operator, drilling contractor, completions company) are often on the same well site at once, each with its own crew, chain of command, and hiring process.
