What is a lease operator (pumper)?

A lease operator — sometimes called a pumper — monitors and maintains producing wells and surface equipment after a well is already online, rather than working the drilling process itself. Day to day, that means routine site visits to check equipment and readings, basic troubleshooting, and reporting issues to a foreman or engineer across an assigned set of leases. It's generally a steadier, more location-fixed role than a drilling rig position, which involves rotational hitches and frequent moves between well sites. Many lease operators move into the role after gaining familiarity with production equipment in a field or contractor position; others are hired directly and trained on the job. On-call expectations for after-hours issues vary by operator, so ask directly about that specific piece before assuming it matches a drilling schedule.
