What is the Permian Basin, and why does it matter for oilfield jobs?
The Permian Basin is a major oil-producing region spanning West Texas and southeastern New Mexico, centered around the twin hub cities of Midland and Odessa, and it's the most active oil-producing region in the United States — which makes it the single largest concentration of drilling, completions, production, and midstream employers in the country. Drilling contractors, pressure-pumping companies, wireline services, and trucking/logistics companies serving all of the above operate throughout the region. Because of its sheer scale, many job seekers targeting oilfield work specifically look at the Permian Basin first, then narrow to a specific city or employer type within it — searching the whole basin at once tends to surface less relevant leads than a more targeted search. Housing and commute logistics vary meaningfully between towns within the basin, worth factoring in before relocating.
