What safety training or gear is required for oilfield jobs?

Requirements vary by role and employer, but common baseline expectations include basic PPE (steel-toe boots, hard hat, safety glasses, flame-resistant clothing for some roles), a general safety orientation, and role-specific training on the equipment you'll actually operate. H2S awareness certification is common at well sites where hydrogen sulfide gas is a possible hazard. Many companies provide their own safety orientation and equipment-specific training as part of onboarding rather than requiring everything up front — which is one reason prior oilfield experience isn't required for most entry-level roles. When evaluating a potential employer, it's reasonable (and a good sign, not an awkward question) to ask directly about their training process, PPE policy, and whether workers have real stop-work authority when something looks unsafe — that last one in particular tends to say a lot about a company's actual safety culture versus its stated policy.
